Bilberries are a traditional circulatory stimulant with an affinity for the eyes and gut. Bilberries have a sour taste and combines well with rosehip. It is useful for horse breeds prone to uveitis or to prevent ulceration of the eyes or gut. Bilberries are high in vitamin C and anthocyanosides which have a significant antioxidant activity.
Dosage: 30-40 grams of dried berries a day in acute cases. The berries can be crushed in 500mL of water or the berries can be hand fed to a horse.
Warnings: Due to the astringent nature of bilberry, it is better to be used only in acute cases. Bilberry can also lower blood glucose in humans and has a potential interaction with anticoaglulants.
